The national Under 20s played their first match of the final group in the Sudamericano Sub 20 on Saturday evening, and yet again – like four of their five first round matches – they drew. This time Paraguay were the opponents.
In stiflingly hot Puerto Ordaz, Argentina started the stronger of the two sides with Juan Neira going close, but the standard started to drop as the first half wore on. Francisco Silva came close for Paraguay in the 42nd minute, the defender heading narrowly over, but at half time it was still goalless.
Shortly after half time, Argentina broke the deadlock. In the 47th minute Jonatan Cristaldo turned inside the area and fired in low to put the Albiceleste into the lead. It didn’t last long – on the hour Paraguay midfielder Hernán Pérez lobbed Diego Rodríguez in the Argentine goal, and the scores were level again. Just two minutes after that the same two players were in a one-on-one again; this time Rodríguez came out victorious.
With five minutes left, Paraguay playmaker Robin Ramírez tried to lob Rodríguez, but the ‘keeper made a good save to keep Argentina’s unbeaten record alive. Now, if they could just start winning…
