Copa Libertadores 2009: catching up on the goals

After the frustration of River’s 0-0 draw on Tuesday, and the disappointment of San Lorenzo’s elimination, the week got rather better for Argentina’s Copa Libertadores representatives. Both Estudiantes and Boca Juniors enjoyed impressive home wins, over Cruzeiro and Guaraní respectively. Estudiantes’ was especially sweet – having been battered a few weeks ago 4-0 in Belo Horizonte, they returned the favour on Wednesday night. Watch the goals from both games right here.

Copa Libertadores 2009

Group 5, 8th April: Estudiantes de La Plata 4 – 0 Cruzeiro (BRA)

The goals in Estudiantes’ thrashing of Cruzeiro came from Juan Sebastián Verón and Gastón Fernández in the first half, followed by a double from Christian Sánchez Prette in the second. This result leaves Estudiantes on 9 points, one behind Cruzeiro, with both those sides having one game remaining. Deportivo Quito host Universitario de Sucre on the 14th, and if they win that match they’ll be just one point behind Estudiantes.

Group 2, 9th April: Boca Juniors 3 – 1 Guaraní (PAR)

Boca Juniors’ goals came through Martín Palermo (but of course), Rodrigo Palacio, and a penalty late on from Juan Román Riquelme. The incredible gambeta and finish for the Paraguayans at the end of the first half, in consolation, was scored by Miguel Paniagua. With this result Boca move onto maximum points from four matches, six clear of both Deportivo Cuenca and Deportivo Táchira, with two matches to go.
