On Monday night Chacarita Juniors took one step closer to the horrific possibility of clashing once more with Boca Juniors next season after beating Unión de Santa Fe 4-2 in Ferro’s stadium. Javier Toledo hit a hat-trick to move El Funebrero six points clear at the top of the Primera B Nacional table.
With the score tied at 1-1, Toledo pounced on two defensive errors in the opening quarter-of-an-hour of the second half to give Chacarita what proved to be an unassailable 3-1 lead. It’s precisely the kind of performance that’s given them 55 points from their 28 matches so far this season (ten rounds remain), and which seems to be propelling them towards a return to Primera A after five years in which the top flight has been safe from their fans.
Mid-table Unión had little response. Nicolás Tauber, in the Chaca goal, put in a good performance – he had to, because in truth his defenders didn’t do a great job – and only Daniel Pérez (who made it 1-1 before half time) and César Pereyra, who scored a second for the visitors when they’d already fallen 4-1 behind, got past him. After Toledo completed his hat trick just before the hour, Matías Alustiza got Chacarita’s fourth in the 69th minute.
Atlético Tucumán and Aldosivi (who play in Mar del Plata) are level on 49 points behind Chacarita, with Belgrano de Córdoba on 47 and another córdoboese side, Instituto, tied on 46 with Atlético Rafaela. Next weekend may see some of that change as Belgrano host Aldosivi.
Those who were expecting Argentines Abroad, don’t panic – it’ll be along on Tuesday night, with news of a league title being celebrated!
