Torneo Apertura 2009: round 14 scores and scorers

The fourteenth round of the Torneo Apertura ended on Monday. Relegation strugglers Racing claiming a hard-fought win over the champions of South America, Estudiantes de La Plata, thanks to a goal from a former Estudiantes player. Estudiantes’ city rivals Gimnasia tore Huracán to shreds, running out 4-1 winners in a match which saw two superb free kick goals (one for each team) in the space of one first half minute. Central and Lanús rounded things off with a dull 0-0 draw. All the heroes and villains are right here, as always.

Primera División Torneo Apertura 2009, fourteenth round:
Chacarita Juniors 0 – 1 Newell’s Old Boys (O. Zarif OG 38)
Tigre (M. Morel 18; C. Fondacaro 90+3) 2 – 0 Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba (J. Curbelo OFF 80)
Banfield (J. Rodríguez 46; C. García 48, 58) 3 – 0 Vélez Sársfield (F. Cubero OFF 83)
Colón (E. Fuertes 2, 62) 2 – 0 Argentinos Juniors
San Lorenzo de Almagro (Alejandro Gómez OFF 81) 0 – 3 Independiente (D. Gandín 37; Alberto Gómez 75; L. Núñez 78)
River Plate (M. Gallardo 69; D. Buonanotte 74; D. Villalba 76) 3 – 1 Atlético Tucumán (E. Gigliotti 3)
Arsenal Fútbol Club (C. Alvarez 75) 1 – 1 Boca Juniors (G. Medel 28)
Racing Club (P. Lugüercio 4) 1 – 0 Estudiantes de La Plata
Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata (J. Vizcarra 18; S. Romero 33; M. Pérez 74; D. Stracqualursi 81) 4 – 1 Huracán (D. Rodríguez 32)
Rosario Central 0 – 0 Lanús

These results leave Banfield and Newell’s joint top of the table on 32 points each. Colón are third on 28, Estudiantes and Independiente have 26 each. Central are a point further back, but like Estudiantes they’ve played a match more than everyone else. The two newly-promoted sides, Chacarita and Atlético Tucumán, prop up the Promedio, with Racing and Gimnasia still running Central close in the two playoff places.

In terms of the title race, the next couple of rounds could be decisive: Banfield take on first Independiente then Racing, with both Avellaneda clubs undergoing something of a resurgence at the moment. Newell’s next match meanwhile is arguably Argentina’s most heated derby (yes, even more so than that one), the clásico rosarino against Central, who are themselves still in the hunt. After that they’ll travel to Colón, who will likewise be eager to capitalise on any slip-ups from the sides just above them. And to think it seemed like such a dull championship when it got underway!

Check back on Tuesday night for a video of all the round’s goals.

  1. ‘And to think it seemed like such a dull championship when it got underway!’

It is never dull. It is dull round your side where there are only the same two-three teams that share the excitement. It is dull here in Australia where there is no relegation, but not at the Torneo.
