The fourteenth round of the Torneo Apertura ended on Monday. Relegation strugglers Racing claiming a hard-fought win over the champions of South America, Estudiantes de La Plata, thanks to a goal from a former Estudiantes player. Estudiantes’ city rivals Gimnasia tore Huracán to shreds, running out 4-1 winners in a match which saw two superb free kick goals (one for each team) in the space of one first half minute. Central and Lanús rounded things off with a dull 0-0 draw. All the heroes and villains are right here, as always.

Rosario Central 0 – 0 Lanús
These results leave Banfield and Newell’s joint top of the table on 32 points each. Colón are third on 28, Estudiantes and Independiente have 26 each. Central are a point further back, but like Estudiantes they’ve played a match more than everyone else. The two newly-promoted sides, Chacarita and Atlético Tucumán, prop up the Promedio, with Racing and Gimnasia still running Central close in the two playoff places.
In terms of the title race, the next couple of rounds could be decisive: Banfield take on first Independiente then Racing, with both Avellaneda clubs undergoing something of a resurgence at the moment. Newell’s next match meanwhile is arguably Argentina’s most heated derby (yes, even more so than that one), the clásico rosarino against Central, who are themselves still in the hunt. After that they’ll travel to Colón, who will likewise be eager to capitalise on any slip-ups from the sides just above them. And to think it seemed like such a dull championship when it got underway!
Check back on Tuesday night for a video of all the round’s goals.
