Torneo Apertura 2009: Round 16 scores and scorers

On Monday evening, Newell’s claimed a win over Colón – only their fifth ever away to their provincial rivals – which lifts them to the top of the table hours before one of their former youth products, Lionel Messi, was named European Footballer Of The Year (more of which on Wednesday in Argentines Abroad). Lanús won in stunning fashion against Arsenal: 2-1 down with half an hour to go, they didn’t go ahead until the 83rd minute, but ran out 5-2 winners to virtually secure their berth in the 2010 Copa Libertadores. And Gimnasia lost a crucial home game to Argentinos late on Monday night, ensuring that Rosario Central stay out of the relegation playoff zone for another week, at least. All the heroes and villains are here, as ever.
