Torneo Apertura 2009: round 18 scores and scorers

The title race is going to the wire (both Banfield and Newell’s will kick off at 17:00 local time on Sunday), as is the final Copa Libertadores spot. Midweek rounds in the Argentine domestic league always seem to be low scoring (maybe it’s just my imagination, but…), and the highest scoring match this week was actually played… um… a month ago. Thursdsy saw Chacarita draw 0-0 with Vélez, Arsenal beat Atlético Tucumán and River Plate, in Daniel Passarella’s first match as president, see of Racing 2-0 in the clásico. There were no red cards in this round – but an astonishing four of the fourteen strikes were own goals. All the heroes and villains are here as per usual.

Primera División Torneo Apertura 2009, eighteenth round:
Rosario Central (J.S. Verón OG 7; G. Castillejos 45+1; A. Alayes OG 68) 3 – 0 Estudiantes de La Plata
Huracán 0 – 0 Boca Juniors
Colón (F. Nieto 53) 1 – 0 Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba
Independiente (D. Gandín 81) 1 – 1 Argentinos Juniors (G. Prósperi 89)
San Lorenzo de Almagro 0 – 1 Lanús (G. Aguirre OG 82)
Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 0 – 2 Newell’s Old Boys (M. Fórmica 15; J. Boghossian 33)
Banfield (R. López 84) 1 – 0 Tigre
Chacarita Juniors 0 – 0 Vélez Sársfield
Arsenal Fútbol Club (M. Granero OG 35; F. Jara 45) 2 – 0 Atlético Tucumán
River Plate (D. Buonanotte 31; M. Abelairas 40) 2 – 0 Racing Club

Check back on Friday night for the goals from Thursday evening’s matches (from Chaca vs Vélez down).

    1. born not too far away from my rental property in mendoza jajaja cool, i’m going to watch this kid. His brother Ramiro is also in the River reserves as a defender. Sounds like River is grooming a barros schelloto mellizo pairing through the system.

  1. Yes he was born in Argentina. He moved to the US with his family at age 10 and has lived there ever since. He is an American citizen.
