Club World Cup final: Estudiantes 1 – 2 Barcelona: the goals

Estudiantes de La Plata played the final of the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, and despite leading for most of the match through a Mauro Boselli header, they found themselves taken to extra time by another header – this one from Pedro, who’s made a bit of history himself. In the extra period it was Lionel Messi, playing for the first time in his career against Argentine opposition, who won the trophy for Barça, chesting/shouldering/chinning the ball over the line. You can watch all the goals right here.

In case you’re wondering what history Pedro made exactly: he’s the first player ever to score in six trophy-winning campaigns for one club in one calendar year. Not bad for a player who only graduated from the reserves last season!

  1. Such a shame for Estudiantes. Not the most convincing piece of goalkeeping from Albil for the equaliser: he started off his line for the ball looped into the air, decided not to challenge for it, and was then easily beaten by a nothing header. If he stays on his line, or retreats after changing his mind, it’s the simplest of saves.

    1. Yes, that is what I thought as well about Pedro’s equalizer, but otherwise it is hard to fault Albil’s performance during the match.

I was rooting for Estudiantes but Barcelona is a class act.

  2. Jeffren ! I had never seen him play before. A huge step up from Henry, who appears to be slaloming downhill at a dizzying pace.
