Estudiantes de La Plata secured their place in the second round of the 2010 Copa Libertadores de América on Tuesday night with a 1-0 win over Peru’s Alianza Lima. The defending champions huffed and puffed in Quilmes, without quite managing to blow Alianza’s house down, until they were awarded a penalty in stoppage time. Seba Verón saw it saved by George Forsyth (who is Peruvian, in spite of his name) but tucked in the rebound to make it 1-0 – and it proved to be virtually the last kick of the game. This result means Estudiantes are safely through to the last 16 as group winners, without having to sweat on whether they’re one of the best 6 runners-up. Alianza finish 2nd, but should qualify along with them. You can watch the goal right here.
