Vélez Sarsfield beat Chivas 2-0 in Liniers on Tuesday night in the first knockout round of the Copa Libertadores but went out due to the Mexicans’ 3-0 win last week in Guadalajara. Santiago Silva scored as early as the third minute on Tuesday night and Chivas barely had an attempt on goal all night, but Vélez couldn’t make a further breakthrough until the eighty-ninth minute when Rolando Zárate gave them a 2-0 lead on the night with a towering header and set up a nervous period of stoppage time for the Mexican visitors. That was it for Vélez though, who in spite of dominating possession against a largely second-string Chivas side didn’t manage much in the way of clear-cut chances (although they hit the woodwork) and exit the competition 3-2 on aggregate. The goals are right here.
