There were three goleadas (that’s ‘thrashings’) on Saturday, with Vélez thumping already-relegated Chacarita Juniors 4-1 and Newell’s tearing a pathetic Gimnasia La Plata to pieces in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa. Most eyebrows were raised, though, in El Cilindro where an actually very even match ended 3-0 to visitors River Plate over Racing. Both sides have improved massively of late but all the same, surely no-one expected Rogelio Funes Mori to get a hat trick before the match was even 25 minutes old. He really must not want rumours about David Trezeguet’s possible transfer to River to come true. Racing’s defeat means they now need to hope Central don’t pick up a win away to Estudiantes tomorrow – or just wait until they beat Chacarita themselves next week to secure safety.
Vélez Sarsfield 4 – 1 Chacarita Juniors
Newell’s Old Boys 6 – 0 Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata
Racing Club 0 – 3 River Plate
