Apertura 2010: a great weekend for Estudiantes, and plenty of goals

La Gata Fernández puts Estudiantes ahead against one of his former clubs

Last weekend was somewhat lacking on the goals front, but Saturday and Sunday more than made up for that with an absolute deluge. Only two matches featured fewer than two goals: Arsenal’s 1-0 away win over Quilmes on Friday, and Estudiantes’ win by the same scoreline away to San Lorenzo, which leaves Seba Verón & Co. five points clear at the top of the table. Saturday’s goals didn’t get posted last night because I was celebrating a friend’s birthday, but you can watch them here along with Sunday’s, and all the scores. Boca Juniors lost, River Plate drew away to Banfield in a highly-charged match, and Gimnasia La Plata and Argentinos Juniors served up a partidazo on Saturday. All this and more, right here…

  1. After a coughing fit and and repeatedly banging my head against the wall, it is Johnny’s weekly Boca update:

Disaster strikes at the Bombonera. After a match which they pretty much dominated, with what must have been a huge difference in time of possession, Boca is nipped at the bitter end by Lanus 2-1. Even with Boca dominating most of the match, they created relatively few scoring chances. Honest to god, they must have set a record (if such records were kept) of crosses in one match. Endless attacking from the edges of the pitch followed by one meaningless cross after another. As it turned out, all of that attacking left them vulnerable to counterattacks, and Lanus capitalized with a stoppage time goal following a semi-questionable penalty on Clemente Rodriguez.

Heartbreaking for Bosteros as Boca played with passion and were well organized for most of the match. BUT, the chronic dual bugaboos of allowing too many goals and not being able to create enough scoring chances caught up with them again.
