Arsenal fail to pressure; Estudiantes are happy to draw

Vélez Sarsfield 0 - 0 Estudiantes de La Plata
This was as exciting as Vélez vs Estudiantes got...

Arsenal de Sarandí needed a win on Friday evening to apply some early weekend pressure on league leaders Estudiantes, and they started well against Godoy Cruz, taking the lead before half time. In the second half though, the visitors scored twice in two minutes, and wrapped the match up with a penalty near the end to record a 3-1 win. That left Vélez and Estudiantes a little more relaxed in the knowledge that no-one could finish above them this weekend, but with Estudiantes missing Seba Verón the leaders were seemingly happy to avoid defeat away to their trickiest opponents of the season. A 0-0 draw ensued in Liniers with Rodrigo Braña, Estudiantes’ defensive midfielder, the best player on the park. The highlights from both games are here.

Luciano Leguizamón gave Arsenal the lead in the 33rd minute. In the second half Ariel Rojas equalised for Godoy in the 57th, and Cristian Campestrini gave them the lead with an unfortunate own goal just two minutes later. César Carranza’s penalty in stoppage time put the game beyond Arsenal’s reach.

Nothing very much happened in the José Amalfitani, except for Gabriel Mercado’s sending off with about two seconds to go for yelling at the referee. Clever boy.

  1. (RE: “This was as exciting as Vélez vs Estudiantes got…) Have to disagree with you there mate. The best moment of the match was when the injury golf cart came on trailing streamers behind it to pick up Gaston Fernandez. It was like he was being whisked away from his own wedding, only without a bride and writhing in agony. It was a a poignant moment for all of us, I think.

  2. El chino rojas has two left feet and shoes made of lead. Much like Funes Mori. But that’s two screamers now he’s buried deep (lanus #2)
