Juan Román Riquelme has seen quite a fuss kicked up over him in the last few days, following Julio César Falcioni’s decision to omit him from the squad which faced All Boys on Saturday. Yesterday, I wrote a piece for ESPN Soccernet which dealt with that decision and the difficulties Boca managers have previously faced in coming to terms with Riquelme’s standing within the club. Today, his left knee flared up again – the same knee that was operated on last year – and he couldn’t train. It’s said to be unlikely he’ll play against Vélez Sarsfield on Sunday.

Boca should have dumped Riquelme and Palermo two years ago (as your intrepid reporter Johnny advised at the time). Boca would have saved a ton of money, done without all the aggravation and heartache, and along the way most likely would have won more matches.
Looks like my hope that Boca can get Roman healthy enough to sell took a hit. Que lo pariO !
