Apertura 2011: Boca extend their lead; Díaz claims his first win at Independiente (video)

Wednesday’s and Thursday’s matches in the 2011 Torneo Apertura saw little resolved in the race for the title other than the confirmation that Boca Juniors are the team to chase. Lanús dropped points for the second round running, Godoy Cruz only drew, and Racing managed a narrower-than-it-should-have-been win over Newell’s Old Boys, whilst Boca beat Estudiantes de La Plata 1-0 to extend their lead to four points. 1. For anyone who didn’t see the Boca match it might look like a pretty boring 1-0 affair the morning after. But what a performance by Boca, and in particular Juan Roman Riquelme. The most inspired effort by Roman I have seen since 2007. He was everywhere, controlled the match from beginning to end, and even tracked back to lend a hand. Seems he is fired up by Boca’s success, and I would bet very happy that he is now, with Palermo’s departure, the sole Boca icon.

Really good news for Boca fans.
