It was inevitable, in spite of a certain lack of cohesion in their play to date, that at some point River Plate were going to click and put in a good team performance, and that their opponents that day were liable to get pretty nastily thrashed. So it proved in River’s first midweek match of the season, in which they beat promoted Atlanta 7-1 at home in Atlanta’s stadium, with Fernando Cavenaghi getting a hat trick. Over in Santiago de Chile, a little later, Vélez Sarsfield claimed a 2-0 away win over Universidad Católica in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana tie. All the goals from both matches are right here.
Nacional B, ninth round: River Plate 7 – 1 Atlanta
