World Cup qualifying Brazil 2014: Argentina 3 – 0 Uruguay (video)

On Friday night, Argentina hosted Uruguay in Mendoza, in the first of the two clásicos rioplatense of this World Cup qualifying edition. The South American champions played poorly in the last qualifying matches a month ago, and although they put up a spirited resistance during the first half, they were blown away in the second with two goals from Lionel Messi – including a Ronaldinho-style under-the-wall free kick – and one from Sergio Agüero. Ángel Di María got two assists as Argentina’s attacking machine once again impressed. Next up for Argentina is a trip to Santiago to take on Chile next Tuesday, but you can watch the goals against Uruguay right here in HD.

Argentina 3 – 0 Uruguay

About the free kick, Messi said right after the match, ‘I could see the goalkeeper was going to come and claim the high ball, and of course the wall were going to jump. Luckily, it went in.’ The win puts Argentina back on top of the group after they’d been temporarily unseated by Colombia (who beat Paraguay 2-0 at home) and Ecuador (who beat Ecuador 3-1, also at home).
