Vélez Sarsfield started their Copa Libertadores campaign on Tuesday night in Guayaquil, Ecuador, away to Emelec, and suffered defeat even as Argentina midfielder Fernando Gago made his debut for his new club. An unfortunate own goal from young striker Facundo Ferreyra, combined with a lacklustre performance by the visitors, was enough to condemn Vélez to defeat. Meanwhile, in San Juan, there was a giant killing in the Copa Argentina; Unión de Villa Krause, who play in Torneo Argentino B (the fourth tier) knocked out Primera side San Martín on penalties after a 0-0 draw. The goals from both games are here.
Emelec 1 – 0 Vélez
San Martín 0 (2) – 0 (3) Unión (VK)
