Libertadores 2013: Newell’s and Tigre both slump to defeats (video)

Thursday night saw the end of midweek action for Argentine clubs, with Newell’s Old Boys visiting Deportivo Lara in Venezuela, and Tigre welcoming Libertad to Victoria, as the hosts played their first ever Libertadores group match. Both sides lost; Newell’s were beaten 2-1, whilst Tigre lost 2-0. The goals from both matches are right here.

Lara 2 – 1 Newell’s

Group 7 has all four teams on three points after this result; every one of the four matches played so far has ended in a home win. Lara took the lead through Javier Gómez after just five minutes, and doubled the lead early in the second half with a brilliant long range effort from Marlon Fernández. Newell’s pulled one back in stoppage time with a dipping drive from Marcos Cáceres, but it wasn’t enough.

Tigre 0 – 2 Libertad

Tigre were dominated in their own stadium by Libertad, managing just four shots all night against the visitors’ fourteen. Early in the second half, Alejandro Donatti was shown a red card for punching a ball off the goal line, and Sergio Aquino slotted in the resulting penalty to give Libertad a deserved lead. Jorge González came off the bench for the Paraguayans and scored the second late on with a visiously dipping free kick.
