Tuesday evening saw two games with Argentine involvement in two different cups: Newell’s Old Boys hosted Universidad de Chile in the Copa Libertadores, and went down 2-1 after conceding two early goals. Elsewhere, Quilmes met Midland (about whom you’ll learn a little something tomorrow, right here on HEGS) of Primera C – the fourth tier – in the Copa Argentina in Vicente López. The Primera side won 3-1. All the goals from both games are right here.
Newell’s 1 – 2 Universidad de Chile
Guillermo Marino opened the scoring for La U just three minutes into this game, with Charles Aránguiz doubling the visitors’ lead from the penalty spot 16 minutes in. Newell’s goal came on the stroke of half time via a brilliant free kick from Ignacio Scocco, but although there were no goals there was still action in the second half, including a red card for Gabriel Heinze (who put his hand into an opponent’s face) and one for visiting player José Rojas later on.
Quilmes 3 – 1 Ferrocarril Midland
Quilmes took an even earlier lead than Universidad de Chile had done, with Emiliano Carrasco giving them the lead after just two minutes. An own goal from Lucas Ochandorena made it 2-0 after 28, and although Midland held out for a long time thereafter, Sebastián Romero got the third six minutes from the end. The Primera C side got a late consolation from Cristian Andrés Campozano.
