Monday Superliga highlights: Independiente thrash San Martín and Argentinos shock Boca

Monday evening in the Superliga brought three games and seven goals. Juan Otero got the only one of the game in La Plata, where Estudiantes bucked the trend of what has been a topsy-turvy round of fixtures by actually winning a match they were expected to win. While they were doing that, over in San Juan Independiente were doing likewise in emphatic style, tearing San Martín apart for a 4-0 away victory with goals from four different players. But if those two simultaneous matches were a brief return to normality after a weekend which saw plenty of shock results, what followed in the last match of the round was very different: Argentinos Juniors scored early on against league leaders Boca Juniors, thanks to a goal from Alexis Mac Allister (son of former Boca player and current Argentine sports minister Carlos Mac Allister), and in a confident performance later doubled their lead through Damián Batallini, running out 2-0 winners in the clásico juniorsense (which is not a clásico at all, but rather a long-running joke on this blog and Hand Of Pod).

Estudiantes de La Plata 1-0 Olimpo

San Martín de San Juan 0-4 Independiente

Argentinos Juniors 2-0 Boca Juniors

That defeat means Boca have failed to take advantage of San Lorenzo’s and Talleres’ failures to win earlier in the round; where they could have stretched their lead to eleven points, they’ll now have to make do with merely an eight point cushion at the top of the table. Independiente’s win, meanwhile, puts them joint third in the table alongside San Lorenzo. Both sides have the same number of points (three behind second-placed Talleres), and have scored and conceded the same numbers of goals. They also both have a game in hand over the rest of the league, which will be played on the 4th April.
