Monday Superliga highlights: Tigre hold Independiente, and Unión get a deserved win

Monday brought two matches in the Superliga, to complete the twentieth round of matches. Unión go into the international break in high spirits after an unfussy 2-0 away win over Banfield. Goals from Mauro Pittón and Franco Fragapane put them two up before half time, and after the break they made sure of the points. For Independiente, things were less simple; hamstrung by four international call-ups (Fabricio Bustos and Maxi Meza are away with Argentina, goalkeeper Martín Campaña and Gastón Silva are on Uruguay duty), they visited Tigre, who kept up their recent record of being hard to beat by rescuing a 1-1 draw thanks to a fine goal from Federico González, cancelling out Silvio Romero’s first half opener.

Banfield 0-2 Unión

Tigre 1-1 Independiente

Going into the international break, then, Boca Juniors lead the league on 47 points, six ahead of second-placed Talleres – who visit the Bombonera when the Superliga resumes after the break. Godoy Cruz are up to third, with 37 points, one ahead of both San Lorenzo and Independiente, both of whom have a game in hand due to Independiente’s involvement in the Recopa Sudamericana a few weeks ago. They’ll play one another on the 4th April.
