Saturday brought no shortage of goals in the twenty-first round of Superliga action. There were nine in the first two games of the day, as Newell’s Old Boys scored twice in the first half to beat Tigre 2-1 (a game marred by a fractured ankle for Newell’s playmaker Brian Sarmiento) and Vélez Sarsfield came back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 at home to Estudiantes before eventually having to settle for just a point in a 3-3 draw. In La Plata, both Kevin and Alexis Mac Allister scored as Argentinos Juniors claimed a 3-1 away win over Gimnasia, and later on there was a 1-1 draw in Santa Fe between Unión and San Martín de San Juan. The visitors aren’t quite mathematically assured of safety just yet, but they might be by the time this round ends (I think; the maths is complicated by the fact Chacarita Juniors have played so few games). In Avellaneda, there was a minor shock as Independiente slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Atlético Tucumán, and lost their grip on third place as a result.
Newell’s Old Boys 2-1 Tigre
Vélez Sarsfield 3-3 Estudiantes de La Plata
Gimnasia La Plata 1-3 Argentinos Juniors
Unión de Santa Fe 1-1 San Martín de San Juan
Independiente 0-2 Atlético Tucumán
