Friday and Saturday Superliga highlights: Temperley and Olimpo go down, and a five-goal thriller in Florencio Varela

Friday’s and Saturday’s matches in the twenty-third round of Superliga action have seen an ever-tightening race for the continental spots, and the relegation picture get a whole lot clearer: defeats for Temperley and Olimpo on Saturday mean both are relegated with five matches to play, and Chacarita Juniors are now the only team left in the drop zone who can still theoretically stay up. On Friday, Atlético Tucumán kept up their challenge for a Copa Sudamericana place with a 2-1 away win over Gimnasia, coming back from 1-0 down at half time, and Huracán kept hopes of an unlikely Copa Libertadores spot alive by beating Argentinos Juniors 1-0 in Parque Patricios. On Saturday, two Santiago García goals helped Godoy Cruz secure a 3-0 win over Temperley, and simultaneously in Bahía Blanca, Olimpo also went out with a slump, going down 2-0 at home to San Martín. The clásico del Sur was a drab affair in which Lanús and Banfield drew 0-0, but there were more goals to come: Belgrano dispatched already-relegated Arsenal de Sarandí 3-0, before a humdinger to close out the day when two goals from Ricardo Centurión couldn’t help Racing, who went down 3-2 away to Defensa y Justicia.

Gimnasia 1-2 Atlético Tucumán

Huracán 1-0 Argentinos Juniors

Godoy Cruz 3-0 Temperley

Olimpo 0-2 San Martín de San Juan

Lanús 0-0 Banfield

Belgrano 3-0 Arsenal de Sarandí
