Superliga Friday highlights: Vélez brush off Newell’s, Tigre and San Lorenzo share four goals, surprisingly

The 2018–19 Superliga season got underway on Friday night. In Liniers, Vélez Sarsfield went ahead earlier and ran out 2-0 winners over a poor Newell’s Old Boys side, thanks to a first minute Luis Abram goal and a twenty-sixth minute Matías Vargas penalty. Shortly after, Tigre v San Lorenzo – which had the look of one of the more boring games of this weekend – saw the hosts go two goals up after just twelve minutes, and the visitors pull things back to be all square well before half time. That was how it ended up finishing – 2-2 – but all the same, when a fixture like this can produce four goals, perhaps it bodes well for the season to come.
