The first evening of action in the third round of Superliga games of the 2018–19 season involved an unusual four matches, including two of the Big Five. Racing, in between the two legs of their Copa Libertadores tie with River Plate, rotated plenty of players but still got a 3-0 win away to Patronato; at the same time, Belgrano took advantage of Estudiantes’ Libertadores rotation to get a 2-1 win, aided by what might turn out to be the goal of the weekend from Matías Suárez for their second. After that, Independiente slumped to a 1-0 home defeat to Defensa y Justicia, and Atlético Tucumán got a 2-1 win at home to Colón.
Racing’s Libertadores tie with River is a controversial one, since former Racing midfielder Bruno Zuculini turns out to have been playing through a suspension all year for River, although currently it looks like CONMEBOL are going to let River off on the basis it was the confederation’s mistake rather than the club’s; River had written to CONMEBOL in February, when Zuculini was signed, to ask whether any of their summer signings had suspensions, and were told none of them did.
